Eye-tracking Evidence for Integration Cost Effects in Corpus Data

چکیده
We tested the predictions of Dependency Locality Theory (DLT), a theory of linguistic processing complexity, against reading time data extracted from a large eye-tracking corpus. DLT predicts differences in processing complexity for subject and object relative clauses. We found elevated reading times on two distinct regions of these relative clauses, in line with the complexity effects predicted by DLT. We also found that transitional probability has an effect on reading time in these two regions, independent of the DLT effect. We argue our approach provides an important new way of testing sentence processing theories by evaluating them against reading data obtained from an eye-tracking corpus of naturally occurring text.

Data from eye-tracking corpora as evidence for theories of syntactic processing complexity.
We evaluate the predictions of two theories of syntactic processing complexity, dependency locality theory (DLT) and surprisal, against the Dundee Corpus, which contains the eye-tracking record of 10 participants reading 51,000 words of newspaper text. Our results show that DLT integration cost is not a significant predictor of reading times for arbitrary words in the corpus. However, DLT succe...
متن کاملIntegration and prediction difficulty in Hindi sentence comprehension: Evidence from an eye-tracking corpus
This is the first attempt at characterizing reading difficulty in Hindi using naturally occurring sentences. We created the Potsdam-Allahabad Hindi Eyetracking Corpus by recording eye-movement data from 30 participants at the University of Allahabad, India. The target stimuli were 153 sentences selected from the beta version of the Hindi-Urdu treebank. We find that wordor low-level predictors (...

Introduction: Designing multimedia learning environments should consist of the evidence-based study and principals about the human learning process. Eye tracking is a way based on the learner processing of learning materials which presented in multimedia learning environments. The aim of the study was to examine the use of the eye-tracking method to investigate the cognitive processes in m...
متن کاملRole of Expectation and Working Memory Constraints in Hindi Comprehension: An Eye-tracking Corpus Analysis
We used the Potsdam-Allahabad Hindi eye-tracking corpus to investigate the role of word-level and sentence-level factors during sentence comprehension in Hindi. Extending previous work that used this eye-tracking data, we investigate the role of surprisal and retrieval cost metrics during sentence processing. While controlling for word-level predictors (word complexity, syllable length, unigram...
متن کاملSyntactic complexity induces explicit grounding in the Maptask corpus
This paper provides evidence for theories of grounding and dialogue management in human conversation. For each utterance in a corpus of task-oriented dialogues, we calculated integration costs, which are based on syntactic sentence complexity. We compared the integration costs and grounding behavior under two conditions, namely face-to-face and a no-eye-contact condition. The results show that ...
